“Lombardi” Begins Run for Broadway July 22-28 Mahaiwe
Forty years ago in the National Football League, the Pack ruled. And who ruled the Pack? Vince Lombardi, the coaching legend for whom the Super Bowl trophy is named. More than any other sports figure, Lombardi transformed football into our national Rite of Fall. But even a living legend was no match for colon cancer, which caused his premature death in 1970 at age 57.

Out @ Barrington Stage kicks off Thursday, July 8
“I think anyone, anywhere who is doing art needs to recognize the creative community as vital to their mission. Not to recognize the role that LGBTQ people play in that is silly. Not only are they great ticket buyers, but they are contributors, supporters, volunteers. They support the arts like nobody else.

A peek at the all-male cast for “Forum” at Williamstown Theatre Festival
When the all-male cast of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum launches their opening number, “Comedy Tonight” they won’t be kidding. Jessica Stone, the director, will be the envy of every woman – and not a few gay men – who ever wanted to be able to boss a bevy of male beauties around.

Half-price ticket outlets expanding to meet local demand
“The people who use 1/2 Tix are amazing,” says Boyd. “They know when it opens, when it closes, and use it as a one-stop shopping center for all the arts. People who love the arts but can’t afford full price will go, and gamble on getting their first, or second or third choice. They may go in looking for something at Barrington Stage and find it is sold out, and end up seeing a cutting edge play at Shakespeare & Company, dance at Jacob’s Pillow or even music at Tanglewood.”

All the Berkshires is a stage from the top of Mount Greylock
The greatest show in the Berkshires opened today as the seasonal road to the top of Mount Greylock opened for the season. Whether approached from North Adams or Lanesboro, the winding, sun-dappled two lane road was recently rebuild by the Commonwealth, and new timber guard rails installed. There are hairpin turns and sheer drop offs along the way making driving challenging and not for the unadventurous.

Interview: Matthew Lopez explains his new play, “The Whipping Man”
The Whipping Man – It’s an unusual and unexpected topic to write a play about, all the more so since Lopez, who is still in his twenties, is a totally modern American male, of Puerto Rican descent, and gay. To meet him you would think he was the life of the party – and he is – yet under the sparkling personality lies a probing and brilliant mind that will not rest.

Review: Commonwealth Opera Stages a Riveting Lucia di Lammermoor
The sound of the orchestra was remarkable, and simply got better and better as the acts marched on. There were two particular sources of delight: a lush, velvety string section, never mushy, never discordant, and the French horn duets which never flubbed and are a signature of the composer.

Paul Taylor, Cowboy Junkies Heading for the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center
May 2010 in Great Barrington will see a diverse array of attractions at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. A gorgeous and elegantly restored theatre, it is that wonderful combination of being big enough to host a large dance company, and intimate enough to make you feel up close and personal with performers who are seen in much larger halls and arenas elsewhere.

Pillow Talk: Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival
DTH’s founder Arthur Mitchell and his company pioneered what can only be described as classicism with attitude. Mitchell’s mentor was George Balanchine, and the company’s works proved that they were crowd pleasers en pointe, but with urban sophistication.
