Tanglewood’s annual Berkshire Night will take place on August 19, 2011, allowing 1,000 year-round residents of the Berkshires to enjoy a Friday-evening Boston Symphony Orchestra concert at the orchestra’s summer home for free. The concert features conductor Christoph von Dohnányi leading the orchestra in Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1, Schumann’s Piano Concerto with soloist Martin Helmchen, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, Eroica. The concert begins at 8:30 p.m. in the Koussevitzky Music Shed.
Massachusetts Berkshire residents with valid identification may obtain two free lawn tickets per person at the Tanglewood Box Office on Monday, August 15, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; Tuesday, August 16, 1 p.m.-6 p.m.; and Wednesday, August 17, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tickets are subject to availability.
Perks designed to enhance concert-goers experience include “This Week at Tanglewood,” the free Friday-evening pre-concert panel discussion series, hosted by Martin Bookspan and featuring special guests and visiting artists who will discuss highlights of the coming week’s schedule; Friday- and Saturday-evening Ozawa Hall 6 p.m. Prelude Concerts, presented by members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (Fridays) and Fellows of the Tanglewood Music Center (Saturdays), and daily tours of Tanglewood. Family-friendly perks designed to make it easier for patrons to bring their children to Tanglewood include free lawn tickets for kids and young people 17 and under and “Watch and Play” and “Kids’ Corner,” two free activities for children held before and during weekend BSO concerts.
Free Drinks, Food, Gift Discounts too
In another new promotion, between Gulf Oil and the Tanglewood, there will be free deals and discounts at the Tanglewood Café, Grille, and Gift Shop, as well as discounted lawn and Shed concerts to BSO concerts. By downloading and printing a voucher at http://www.tanglewood.org/gulfoffers, patrons can take get a free fountain soda with the purchase of a sandwich and a small bag of chips at the Tanglewood Café or Grille; receive a 15% discount on Meals-To-Go orders by calling 413-637-5152 (orders should be made at least 48 hours in advance), or get a free copy of Sol Schwartz’s Drawing Music: The Tanglewood Sketch Book, featuring sketches of guest artists, BSO musicians, and TMC Fellows, done by local artist Sol Schwartz, available at the Tanglewood Glass House.
Gulf Oil is also sponsoring ticket discount deals including 50% off lawn tickets and 30% off Shed tickets, valid for most regular and specially prices BSO concerts in the Koussevitzky Music Shed and Ozawa Hall, July 8-August 28, based on availability.
