Tina Packer directs William Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida in Boston in May for the Actor’s Shakespeare Company. Photos are by Stratton McCrady.
Tina Packer is the champ when it comes to Shakespeare, she’s earned her black belt in the Bard’s lesser known works for good reason. She makes sense of them, puts them in their place if you will. We miss her full time involvement in the Berkshires at Shakespeare & Company, but she is finally able to pursue a dream, directing Shakespeare in Boston. Being performed at the Modern Theatre at Suffolk University by the Actor’s Shakespeare Project through May 20, (use our half price ticket link below includes performances to May 18) it has a strong, mostly professional Actors Equity cast and brilliantly choreographed fight scenes.
The Story
Set during the middle of the long and drawn-out Trojan War, this cynical and bitterly funny work guides audiences through the minds of the ravaged warriors who were destined to become immortal in their symbolism. Meanwhile, Troilus, a brother of Paris, falls in love with Cressida. She loves him too, but plays hard to get. Love and misunderstanding lead to longing and jealousy, and how the characters cope with adversity resonates through the ages.

Good to see Tina out and about.
The actress who played Cressida was marvelous. Most of the others, I think, have elocution issues. Fast-talking, not always easy to understand.
