How do you describe something so new it has no vocabulary to explain it? That’s the challenge of explaining TouCh and its AcousticaElectronica. The note from Director Colin Thurmond gives the basics: “we have been invited back for a four week run on Aug 3, 10, 17, 24! This time we are returning with a brand new and improved immersive theatre production mixing classical and electronic dance music, with professional dancers, aerialists, live musicians and DJ’s :The WIG, David Day, Mike Swells, Randy Deshaies, Will Monotone, Joe Bermudez and John Barera.”

But here is video and some text that will give you a good picture of this incredibly innovative company which is as outrageous as it is artistic.

AcousticaElectronica blends the virtuosity found in the classical concert hall with the infectious energy of the late-night dance club. The best of both worlds: artistic depth and irresistible appeal. It is sexy and classy, sensuous and stoic, irreverent and reverential. Bach meets a dance club back-beat, Chopin meets trance, Carmen’s habanera and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata are blended with house music for a listening experience unlike anything you have ever heard before. Live Musicians perform with professional DJ’s. Professional dancers reinvent the typical “go-go” dancer, blending ballet, jazz, modern and improvised movement. Aerialists fly above the audience as if Cirque du Soleil met a rave.

his ultimate dance party becomes an immersive experience for the audience. Dancers, symphonies, aerialists, operas, live musicians all happen around every inch of the space to keep the audience guessing at every turn. A classical world becomes the technicolor world of the dance club as the audience escapes from their real lives to experience a night of dream, abandon, and ecstasy.

Live music, manipulated music, danceable music. The Concert Hall meets the Rock Club.

The project grew from a desire of former musicians, dancers, and actors at the New England Conservatory and Boston Conservatory to reconcile their rigorous conservatory training with their love of electronic music, and late night dance clubs. All the artists were frustrated with the pervasive headlines of “classical music, art and theatre are dying.” AcousticaElectronica was born.

AcousticaElectronica debuted at the Boston TOGETHER festival in April of 2011, a festival devoted to electronic music in the city of Boston. It recently finished a sold out run in February at OBERON. Listen to a bit of the artistic concept behind the company:

With Choreography by Elizabeth McGuire, Directed by Marissa Rae Roberts and Produced by Colin Thurmond, it’s the kind of immersive party experience that is as much about the audience as the performers.
