Pittsfield, MA – World class performers are on tap for International Guitar Night, the premier traveling guitar festival. They include world renowned guitarists Brian Gore, Martin Taylor, Solorazaf and Celso Machado who will be in the Berkshires for one-night-only at Pittsfield’s Colonial Theatre on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 8pm.
International Guitar Night brings together the world’s foremost acoustic guitarists to perform their latest original compositions and exchange musical ideas in a public concert setting. Sponsored by Acoustic Guitar Magazine, it is the only production of its kind to have grassroots origins. Ever since its beginning in 1995 in a converted laundromat in the California Bay Area, IGN has featured the best performing guitar composers from around the world. Since the beginning, audiences have cherished the friendly informal ambiance of the performances. Participants have relished the chance IGN affords to express reverence for one another, and to collaborate rather than compete. The unique brand of “guitar positivity” the forum provides has helped make IGN the most successful guitar showcase of its kind.
Each tour, IGN founder Brian Gore invites a new cast of guitar luminaries to join him for special evenings of solos, duets and quartets that highlight the virtuosity and diversity within the world of acoustic guitar. At the Colonial, Brian will be joined by jazz legend Martin Taylor from Scotland with his smooth chord/melody stylings; Solorazaf, a great Madagascar guitarist and singer with a unique rhythmic sense, and renowned Brazilian composer and guitarist, Celso Machado.
San Francisco guitar poet Brian Gore has a reputation as one of the most interesting and influential performers of “the next generation” in acoustic guitar. His style offers strikingly beautiful tone and dynamics, and he draws much of his inspiration from myth and modern literature.
British jazz guitarist Martin Taylor has recorded over 25 albums and enjoyed a musical career spanning over 30 years. This internationally acclaimed artist has received 14 British Jazz Awards, a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, and an MBE for “Services To Music” (presented by her Majesty the Queen). Taylor’s most recent projects include a release with his group Spirit of Django, Last Train to Hauteville, and a solo album Double Standards.
Solorazaf is a French-Malagasy guitarist and singer who has toured with legendary artists like Miriam Makeba and Nina Simone. Named a “master of the 12/8 saleg rhythm” by Acoustic Guitar Magazine, this talented guitarist mixes complex guitar patterns with his singing to produce a sound that is highly rhythmic and smoothly flowing. He also adds foot percussion, using homemade “stompboxes.”
Celso Machado is a Brazilian guitarist living near Vancouver, British Columbia. Drawing on his thorough study of classical guitar, Celso composes for guitar and ensemble. His remarkably innovative compositions are infused with a rich knowledge of the traditional music of Brazil: samba, chôro, baião, frêvo etc. Published by Editions Henry Lemoine in Paris, his compositions are performed and recorded worldwide. While Celso’s music is rooted in Brazilian rhythmic and melodic styles, it also reflects his incurable fascination with other world music traditions.
“With the International Guitar Night, Brian Gore has created a new niche for the myriad of styles that can be played by the unaccompanied acoustic guitar, as well as marvelous opportunity for virtuosos to interact and learn from one another onstage.” -Michael Parrish, Dirty Linen (100th Anniversary Edition)
(Please note change in program: Celso Machado is replacing previously announced, Guinga).
