Jim Charles Foresees a great 11th Season for the Cohoes Music Hall.

Jim Charles Foresees a great 11th Season for the Cohoes Music Hall.

Cohoes, NY: It’s a fascinating lineup with some musicals crossing over from adult themes to a kid’s version and other fun shows for adults bringing a little nostalgia with them like Forever Plaid in a brand new Christmas show, which will be a swell alternative for the holidays.

One of the “C-R Musicals for Kids” I would like to see is how they can rehabilitate Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street for the younger set. After all, this is the dark Sondheim musical about a wronged barber who slit throats for revenge and sends them down a chute for Mrs. Lovett to make meat pies that the public just adores. Then there is the tale of the Nubian princess and the Egyptian soldier which Verdi composed into a grand opera Aida. Disney turned into a charming love story for Broadway which will reshape the story for the younger set.

As always Jim Charles and Tony Rivera have come up with a rich and varied menu, including the courage to stage Les Miserables once again. We have still to watch the Blu Ray film version which just came out on DVD with all the bells and whistles you could ask for, but the screener sent for award voters in Decemeber was pretty dark, dingy even. Many of us prefer to see and hear this gloomy tale of misery and disappointment live and in person. It’s a real heart tugger so some have suggested that a tissue dispenser be placed in front of every seat for use by those easily prone to become very Verklempt. (LM)

LES MISERABLES

October 3-13, 2013

This international smash-hit may be the most popular musical in the world. In 19th century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a life-long struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean’s adopted daughter. His world-view shattered, Javert commits suicide, and Valjean at last attains the peace he has sought for so long.

FOREVER PLAID: PLAID TIDINGS

December 5-15, 2013

A brand-new show that offers the best of Forever Plaid tied-up in a nifty package with a big Christmas bow on top! Filled with Christmas standards that have all been “Plaid-erized,” our boys are back to do their Christmas Special. At first Francis, Jinx, Smudge, and Sparky aren’t sure why they’ve returned to Earth for another posthumous performance, but a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know that they’re needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world. Sprinkled among the Christmas offerings are audience favorites like their riotous three minute and eleven second version of “The Ed Sullivan Show” – this time featuring the Rockettes, the Chipmunks and The Vienna Boys Choir, and a Plaid Caribbean Christmas which puts the “Day-O” in Excelsis!

URINETOWN

March 13-23

One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, Urinetown is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

May 8-18

A down-and out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination!

She is determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. With the help of the other girls in the Orphanage, ANNIE escapes to the wondrous and magical world of NYC. She finds a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

AIDA

January 9-12, 2014

A contemporary musical take on a grand classic tale of the timeless bond between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier. As forbidden love blossoms between them, the young lovers are forced to face death or part forever. Together, they set a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity.

SWEENEY TODD: School Edition

April 10-13, 2014

The rare instance of a musical thriller, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe!
