As the season wraps up, it is time for a look ahead at what is coming down the road in musical theatre. Labor Day weekend means some lively, challenging, new and different music from the Barrington Stage Musical Theatre Lab. This year some 32 composers have been selected to deliver their newest songs under the watchful eye of Artistic Producer William Finn. Whether we should blame Finn himself, or Artistic Director Julianne Boyd for the annual event’s marathon title “Songs by Ridiculously Talented Composers and Lyricists You Probably Don’t Know But Should” (SBRTCALYPDKBS) is not as important as getting in on the best of Broadway that is yet to come. The show will play Friday, August 30 and Saturday, August 31 at 8pm at Barrington Stage’s Boyd-Quinson Mainstage, 30 Union Street.
Tony Award-winning composer/lyricist William Finn (Falsettos, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) narrates this popular introduction to new voices in musical theatre. Direction is by Associate Producer Shakina Nayfack, music direction by Jeremy Robin Lyons, lighting design by Robert Brown, sound design by Kaitlyn Kelly. Lisa Klages is stage manager.
A Labor Day weekend celebration of extraordinary new songs, Finn shares with the audience what makes a good lyric, why some work and others don’t – you’ll feel as if you’re in a master class in songwriting taught by the master himself.
Songs by Ridiculously Talented Composers and Lyricists You Probably Don’t Know But Should… features the talents of Elizabeth Stanley (BSC’s On the Town; Broadway: Company, Cry-Baby); Alysha Umphress (BSC’s On the Town, Funked Up Fairy Tales/Carmel’s Candy Store; Broadway: American Idiot, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert).
