Troy, NY — The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute announces Bach and Beyond, a solo violin performance by Jennifer Koh. The concert will take place in EMPAC’s Concert Hall on Friday, November 30 at 8 PM.
Jennifer Koh presents a concert from her Bach and Beyond series, a set of three solo violin recitals that strengthen the connections of the Six Sonatas and Partitas by Bach and the present day through a historical journey of solo violin works by composers such as Béla Bartók, Phil Kline, Kaija Saariaho, and John Zorn.
Violinist Jennifer Koh is recognized for her intense, commanding performances, delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance. Since the 1994-95 season, when she won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, the Concert Artists Guild Competition, and the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Koh has been heard with leading orchestras and conductors worldwide. Also a prolific recitalist, she appears frequently at major music centers and festivals.
With an impassioned musical curiosity, Koh is forging an artistic path of her devising, choosing works that inspire and challenge. In 2009, she debuted Bach and Beyond, a six-year, three-recital series that explores the history of the solo violin repertoire from Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas to works by modern day composers and new commissions. Highlights of her upcoming season include Bach and Beyond recitals in New York, Toronto, and Berkeley; the solo violin role of Einstein in a new production of Philip Glass’s Einstein on the Beach, also in New York and Berkeley; appearances with the New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony Orchestra; and Bach’s complete Sonatas and Partitas performed in a single concert in Houston.
Koh brings the same sense of adventure and brilliant musicianship to her recordings as she does to her live performances. She regularly records for the Cedille label, which recently released Rhapsodic Musings and the Grammy-nominated album String Poetic. Her next recording, featuring the works from her first Bach and Beyond recital, will be released in the fall of 2012.
Tickets are $18 general admission; $13 non-Rensselaer students, seniors, and Rensselaer faculty + staff; and $6 Rensselaer students (must provide ID for discounted tickets).
Evelyn’s Café will open at 7 PM with a full menu of meals, snacks, and beverages as well as a selection of wines. Service continues after the performance. Parking is available in the Rensselaer parking lot on College Avenue.
