Albany, NY – The UAlbany Performing Arts Center, operating under the auspices of the College of Arts and Sciences, is pleased to present a 24 Hour Theatre Project on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 7:30pm. Presented in collaboration with WAM Theatre and in conjunction with the NYS Writers Institute, the event boasts the best in theatre talent from across the Capital Region and the Berkshires. Given just 24 hours to create, rehearse and perform five new plays, the project combines the spontaneous creativity of improvisational theatre with the rigorous professionalism and production value of scripted theatre.
After a two year hiatus, this fast-paced, adrenaline-packed event is back. Sponsored for three years by WAM Theatre and MopCo, the event has taken place previously at the Arts Center of the Capital Region (2011), Shakespeare and Company’s Bernstein Theatre complex (2012) and the John Sayles School of Fine Arts (2013). The UAlbany Performing Arts Center is this year’s host and will welcome all 50 participants on Friday, April 1 to kick off the event. Playwrights will spend the overnight hours creating new work which will be delivered to directors, actors and designers at 8am on Saturday morning leaving less than twelve hours to rehearse before the 7:30pm curtain.
“This event holds a warm place in our hearts at WAM,” says Artistic Director Kristen van Ginhoven. “We are delighted the UAlbany Performing Arts Center has invited us to bring it to life again. The space at UAlbany is perfect for this project. We can’t wait to fill it with artists and create five new plays in 24hrs!”
This year’s participants include playwrights Kat Koppett, Jessica Provenz, Maizy Scarpa and Yvette “Jamuna” Sirker; directors Michael Burns, Molly Clancy, David Girard, Margaret Hall and Yvonne Perry; and actors Marnie Andrews, Kathleen Carey, Stephanie Carlson, Brendan Cataldo, Tyiesha Dejesus, Peter Delocis, Sean Dolnick, Ulisses Gonsalves, Tom Jaeger, Kelsey Keane, Colleen Lovett, Daniela Malave, Brenny Rabine, Lia Russell Self, Don Paul Shannon, Eileen Schuyler, Leigh Strimbeck and JV Hampton VanSant.
The production staff and designer team includes scenic designer Juliana von Haubrich; costume designers Brittney Belz and Peggy Walsh; lighting designers Robyn Warfield and James Bilnoski; sound designers Beth Lake and Michael Chaney; technical director Sam Craig; production stage manager Hope Rose Kelly; stage managers Heather Fleming, Joe Sicotte, Laura Gomez, Melissa Rao and Shannon McManus; and set crew members Annaleigh Lester, Eddie Knight, Kadie McTeigue and Maghen Ryan.
Past participants sum about the experience in a variety of ways. For 2012 director Sara Katzoff, “The 24 hour theater project was an incredibly exciting avenue that brought together so many disparate movers and shakers within the theater community and united us in complete, full-contact collaboration!” 2011 actor Tony Rivera referred to the project as “…what the Theatre Olympics opening ceremony would be like but for 24 hours.” Two time participant and actor Eileen Schuyler is back and claims, “It’s a once in a lifetime theatre event. Let the rumpus begin!”
