A Few Words from Kieron Barry About His Play

unnamedTHE OFFICIAL ADVENTURES OF KIERON AND JADE
starring Jason Guy and Bonita Jackson
directed & designed by John Sowle
sound design by Carmen Borgia
stage manager – Caedmon Holland

A few words about his play from the playwright, Kieron Barry

“There’s something cathartic about knowing that others make the same mistakes I do.  A break-up is an everyman story.  But I took a bit of risk in broadcasting something so highly private. It had to have that lightness of touch.  I needed [the story] to be as fizzy as champagne albeit with a shard of broken glass at the bottom.”

“You’re just enjoying two people talking together briskly and cleverly.  Like in a 1930s screwball comedy, it’s a heightened linguistic form with exquisitely wrought phrases.  It loses the realistic quality of everyday language but benefits from that burnished quality.”

“In a comedy, if people haven’t laughed in the last 30 seconds, you’re in trouble.  But, as long as people are laughing, you can get away with almost everything else.  I can raise a difficult subject and, if I can make a joke out of it, it will work.”

    • You are most welcome, John! I look forward to reading and posting Barbara Waldinger’s review of this show next week. I hear good things about Bridge Street Theatre – I only wish you were in reasonable driving distance for me (I am based in Williamstown, MA). Break legs!
