Soul Rebel Performance Troupe, a Watervliet-based organization with a mission of fostering better cross-cultural understanding through the performing arts, will present a weekend of one-acts, monologues and stand-up comedy at the First Congregational Church on Quail St. in Albany, NY. This is the troupe’s second production in the First Congregational Church. “Our home theater is located in a former church in Watervliet, which is currently under repair,” Soul Rebel founder and director Jean-Remy Monnay explained. “We are grateful to Reverend James Eaton and Mr. Jim Dennehey and the congregation for opening their doors to us. We are excited to have an Albany venue and hope to see many new faces in the audience.”
Two one-act plays by local playwright Joe Starzyk, Instant Harmony and Vatican 3G are part of the weekend’s line-up. The additional one-acts are Harriet Tubman Visits a Therapist by Carolyn Cage, and Meridian Mississippi Redux by Le Wilhelm. Local comedienne Doreen Watson will perform stand-up comedy.
Monnay founded Soul Rebel Performance Troupe in 2009 after experiencing first-hand, as a Haitian immigrant, the void in performing arts opportunities. The troupe is dedicated to showcasing performance and theatrical work by artists of color and other marginalized groups.
