Troy, NY — Performer, writer, and interactive electronics artist Andrew Schneider will perform his Obie Award-winning one-man theater piece, YOUARENOWHERE, on August 10 and 11 at the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (110 8th St., Troy). Each show will begin at 8PM.
Based on quantum physics and the theory of parallel universes, YOUARENOWHERE uses an array of complex visual and aural effects to produce a fluid, shifting landscape of sensory overload. Part inspirational seminar, part confessional one-man show, the performance is at turns a witty and alarming romp through subjects as diverse as sci-fi, pop culture, missed connections, YouTube, and AA recovery steps. Lauded by Time Out New York as “a tour de force—both of acting and design,” and as “revelatory theater” by The Village Voice, the show earned Schneider an Off-Broadway Theater Award (Obie) in 2015 and has since toured internationally.
A former member of the celebrated New York experimental theater company the Wooster Group, Schneider creates work that is rooted at the intersection of performance and technology, critically investigating our overdependence on being perpetually connected in an always-on world.
Since 2016, Schneider and his collaborators have been working in residence at EMPAC to develop the sequel to YOUARENOWHERE, titled AFTER. Picking up where the first show leaves off, this new work is being developed around new theatrical technologies such as projection mapping and will mark the first time that EMPAC’s Wave Field Synthesis sound spatialization technology has been used in the theatrical context. AFTER will receive its world premiere at EMPAC on August 31 and September 1.
