Vedrana Kalas, soprano, is a native of Bosnia, a war torn country, from which she emigrated as a teenager with her family. She graduated from Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam with honors and several vocal awards. Equally comfortable as a concert soloist Ms. Kalas performed with the Nacre Dance Company of Saratoga Springs, Opera Saratoga, Octavo Singers, Jubilate Singers, Mendelssohn Club of Albany, and Albany Pro Musica. Most recently, Ms. Kalas appeared as a soprano soloist with the NYC Ballet and Orchestra in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at SPAC in Saratoga Springs. Recently selected as the finalist for the prestigious Jenny Lind- Barnum Festival Voice Competition in Bridgeport (CT), Ms. Kalas is also a two time recipient of the Joel Dolven Vocal Award from the Mendelssohn Club of Albany. As a non- native English speaker, she is especially passionate about working with children from different cultures. Growing up through the Bosnian war she is particularly sensitive to children who come from similar underprivileged circumstances. In September of 2013 she dedicated her solo recital “Ouvre ton coeur” to children and youth of Bosnia who don’t have the opportunities that many of us are blessed with every day. This concert will be reprised on First Night in an effort to continue this awareness. Pianist, Noah Palmer will be accompanying the performance. Mr. Palmer is the Artistic Director of the Northern Berkshire Chorale in Williamstown, Massachusetts and accompanist for Albany Pro Musica, the Capital Region’s leading choral ensemble. He is also Musical Assistant for the Broad St Chorale and Orchestra in Kinderhook, NY. As a choral conductor he has led, among other groups, the Sage Singers and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus. In 2016, Palmer was an apprentice coach and chorus master with the Merola Opera Program, the San Francisco Opera’s prestigious young artist program. He spent two seasons on the music staff of the Midwestern Institute of Opera in Illinois, where he made his debut conducting Ravel’s l’Enfant et les Sortileges. He has also worked with regional opera companies including Sarasota Opera, assisting productions of Verdi’s Il Trovatore and Jerusalem, as well as Opera North, where he spent two seasons as the pianist for educational outreach tours, following a Summer with the company’s prestigious young artist program. Palmer has worked with many New York area opera companies including Amore Opera, the NJ Association of Verismo Opera, and the New York Opera Exchange. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the United States, Europe, and China.
